Hello,
I decided to do a post on my favorite vintage beauty products. Most of the products that I prefer have been around for awhile and are effective in what they are supposed to do. Also when it comes to beauty products I like to be money saavy where possible and most of these products are fairly affordable.
1. Ponds Cold Cream
History/Purpose:
Ponds started in 1846 and later came out with their cold cream also known as "vanishing cream" in 1910. Cold cream is an emulsion of water and fats usually including beeswax and mineral oil. The cream is designed to hydrate, smooth skin and remove any dirt/oil and makeup, but also has a fresh cooling effect on the skin after use.
Why I Like it?
I was a bit skeptical about trying this product at first just because it has mineral oil in the ingredients and I haven't heard to many great things about it. Such as clogging up pores etc. After using it a couple times my skin is quite soft and hydrated. I usually use it as a cleanser for removing my makeup and then I remove it with a damp washcloth. I tend to love heavier products just because I live in such a dry climate where our winters are super dry and our summers are even worse. I definately recommend this product for those women that need that extra boost of hydration. Also is an excellent makeup remover as well.
2.Vaseline
History/Purpose:
Introduced in 1872 by Robert Chesebrough while he was in the oil fields he discovered a residue called "rod wax" that had to be periodically removed from oil pumps, he later learned that oil workers were using this substance for minor cuts and burns. Robert took samples of this and manufactured petroleum jelly known as Vaseline. Vaseline has a myriad of uses and tons of them are specifically for beauty.
Why I Like it?
Like I said above, you can use it for so many different things. For example eye makeup removal, you can put some on your feet before you go to bed for very hydrated feet, chapped lips, lots of people swear by putting Vaseline on their eyelashes before bed and have reported thicker lashes.
3. Marcelle Translucent Face Powder
History/Purpose:
Unfortunately I couldn't find an actual history on Marcelle products, all I know is that they are Canadian made. The face powder is best used for setting your entire makeup.
Why I Like it?
Best powder by far that I have found. It is very lightweight, doesn't settle into fine lines and is great for sensitive skin. Also my great grandmother used to use this all the time and she had nice skin.
4.Chanel No.5 Perfume
History/Purpose:
This was the first perfume launched by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. It is the world's top selling perfume, apparently selling a bottle once every 6 seconds. Also one of Marilyn Monroe's signature perfumes.
Why I Like it?
The smell is quite classic which I love. Some people would call this an old lady perfume. I don't know why as I think anyone can wear this scent.
5. Yardley English Lavender Perfumed Talc
History/Purpose:
Established in 1770, Yardley became a major producer of soaps and perfume. Used after bathing or showering, leaves your skin feeling soft and subtly frangranced with English lavender.
Why I Like it?
Such a lightweight powder, not heavy at all. This stuff makes your skin so soft its unreal. The smell also isn't overpowering and if your a fan of lavender you'll like this.
There you have it folks! My awesome list of vintage beauty must haves. I hope you enjoyed and don't forget to comment ;)
Amie
XoXo

I love cold cream too and Ponds is definitely my favourite...but it is getting so hard to buy it in Australia that I make my own now (just almond oil, beeswax, borax and water) and it is almost identical in consistency but without all the extra chemical things.
ReplyDeleteI love this post! Thank you for sharing and I might have to try some of these things out!
